The Sofa Adventure

Overall our moving experience was pretty good (you know considering it's a day of manual labor in the Israeli sun). The only small hiccup was that the couch we wanted to take from Bat Yam wouldn't fit in the elevator. To carry it down the stairs, the movers wanted to charge ₪40 for every floor they had to carry the couch down and ₪50 for every floor they had to carry the couch up. That would've been an extra ₪440 (~$130) which in retrospect isn't that bad for a nice couch but in the (literal) heat of the moment we decided to leave it.

Unfortunately that decision left our living room looking a little sad...

(Luckily since we did leave the couch they could cancel the movers scheduled for Tair's grandparents and in the end money was actually saved)

About two weeks into our sofa search, one of my co-workers said that her friend was looking to get rid of a sofa. As it turns out she wanted to get rid of it badly enough that she said we could take it for free just to get it out of the way.

Excited and determined about the prospect of a free couch, we took some measurements and decided to cram the whole thing in the back of our Mazda 3 hatchback. The first thing that our couch donors said when we arrived at their house was that there was no way it would fit in our car. It's okay, we told them, we brought rope. About a half hour's worth of shifting and shoving later we tied down the hatch and drove off very slowly.

Luck was with us; the 20 minute drive back to our apartment was completely uneventful. We unloaded our new couch outside of our apartment building and like moving champions carried it inside, jammed it into the elevator and then lugged it into our living room.

Now to get a TV at which to face it....
